Garden Cake Decorating

Directions:

This cake was for a professor who is a marine biologist at Suny Brock port.

This is a 3 layer cake. The bottom and middle layers were first frosted with Wilton's white butter cream frosting and then covered with Wilton's ready-made fondant tinted a royal blue. The blue was kneaded in partially, leaving a swirled effect - in order to resemble a sea or ocean. The top layer was frosted in beige butter cream and was meant to look like an island. She used brown sugar and cinnamon sugar for the sand, and green tinted coconut for the grass. The palm trees were part of Top's party set for Jurassic park and the oranatang sitting underneath the trees was part of a Pet Shoppe set.

From the 1999 Wilton catalogue she used the ideas for the octupii, the shells, starfish and coral decorations were from The Party Works (Birthdays and More) and also the idea to use rock candy for the rocky reef look. The diver and chest were bought at Wal-Mart, found in the aquarium section. The mermaid was actually a Disney's Little Mermaid figurine but repainted with acrylics to look a little more grown up!

The second and third layers were supported with wooden cake dowels put in the underlying layers. All layers sat on a piece of cardboard and the three finished and stacked layers were held in place with a long dowel going through all. The diver was hot glued to a thin wood skewer and held in "mid-sea" with that.
